Reflection

After reading the reading the article “The Mechanical Bride”. It made me realize of much the press can change our way of thinking. Newspaper is like entertainment because of the tales that is being told by an anonymous narrator to an equally anonymous audience. It says “Discontinuity is in different ways a basic concept both of quantum and relativity physics” (The Mechanical Bride). Basically what this quote is saying it’s a way to look at civilizations and human cultures. This way of thinking is irrationalism because in the article it says “Quantum and relativity physics are not a fad. They have provided new facts about the world, new intelligibility, new insights into the universal fabric” (The Mechanical Bride). This could lead to good or bad editorial policies because the individual is now accustomed to human interest stories from every part of the globe. This reflects back on the conversation I had in class about one of the last articles I’ve read, which is called “Seeing Ourselves Through Technology” by Jill Walker Rettberg. In that article it talked about how we let technology represent ourselves today and in the article it says “Filter blogs often aim for material and ideas that the blogger is interested in” (Rettberg). Just like with technology, even the press can attract people interests. With the press and the media only sharing topics that will catch everyone around the globe attention. They don’t share the topics that are suppose to be important and what everyone around the globe should be focused on. “These habits blind people to the real changes of our time. People have been taught to accept opinions and attitudes of the press” (The Mechanical Bride). This shows how the media in general have conditioned individuals to not focus the real changes in our world. In the article, “The Mechanical Bride” it is describing how the reporter is the turtle and the industrial man is the shell for the reporter. So that means in modern newspaper isn’t seen by the reporters point of view. The voices that hear when you are reading the newspapers, you are hearing the people that’s above the writer. In the article, “This inside point of view would coincide with the practical point of view of the man who rather eat the turtle than admire the design on its back” (The Mechanical Bride). This is a representation of how we let the media and press change our way of thinking because we are more interested to their stories and focus on the world changes that is happening around us.
