Main Idea:
The main idea in “Seeing Ourselves Through Technology Chapter 2”, is that we our using filters in our reality, which is affecting how we wan to express ourselves in certain ways. “Filters has become important in today’s culture, we filter our images, our email, and our news feed” (Rettberg). This shows that everything we do or see in our everyday lives is being filtered and we don’t see it. When it comes taking pictures we tend to think we are looking at the original picture, but what in reality pictures gets filtered all the time. Our emails could be filtered on how we want to express ourselves just by the way how we sent our text. Also, news feed is filtered because some news feed are showed in our interested and these are things we use in everyday life that we haven’t noticed.
Commentary:
A comment I would like to make is that the author Rettberg stated that “users who saw posts with positive words used more positive words in their own posts”. This shows that looking through websites and social media can alter how we want to express something about a certain topic. We tend to let other peers to filter what we want to say because of what we see.
Summary:
My summary about this chapter is that I think we should pay attention more about we express ourselves because of filters and how it alters our reality. We don’t pay attention how we actually want to express our actual self. Instead, we express ourselves how we others want to perceive us. Like what Rettberg said, “technical filters allow us to express ourselves in certain ways, but not in others”.
